The town of Botolan was one of the early trading points in Zambales, the Bucao River (4Km North of Rama) , originally named Peurto Ginto by the Spanish who developed a major port facility for trading. Gold was mined then and still is today, from the old Spanish mine in Mt. Binoclutan This was also operated by the Americans during Colonial times and the Japanese during their occupation in World War II.

Since the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo in 1991 all traces of the Spanish wharfs have unfortunatly been destroyed. During the dry season one can walk much of the Bucao River due to the build up of "Lahar" (Volcanic Ash Flow areas) getting great views of Mt. Pinatubo. Today Botolan is very much a rural town with exceptionally pristine, uncrowded beaches. There is much to see in the area. Starting in the north of the Province, Santa Cruz (approx 2 hours drive from Botolan) there is an area of fascinating Limestone Caves; the old mining town of Acoe with a Baguio like climate; and Masinloc (approx 1 Hour from Botolan) which has a beautiful Natural Harbour; Fish Port and Cromite loading facilities. Also near to Masinloc in Palauig is Mt. Tapalao (also known as High Peak) and at 2037 meters is the highest peak in Zambales. Fortunately due to it's inaccessibility it remains a pristine Rain Forest area, for the adventurous that like to hike, this is a real treat.

Next North is Iba (20 minutes from Botolan) which has the Bancal River, a delightful tidal river along which still remain the ruins of the original Spanish Govenor's (Don Vincente Camra) house and stables and the Spanish grainary. Rice was exported from Iba and Botolan to Spain from the deep water port on the Bancal River to Batangas to be loaded on the Galleons to Spain. Iba also hosts an Airport, which was of immense importance to both the Japanese and the Americans during World War II, a good choice of Restaurants, Chinese, European and Filipino. A number of disco's with live bands and night clubs also are available.

Binoclutan (where Rama is located) host a number of interesting areas with waterfalls, which offer great bushwalking and some spectacular views from the top of Mt. Binoclutan. Heading south is are great for beaches all the way to the old Subic Naval Base in Olongapo, one can detour inland to Pili which, since the Eruption of Pinatubo, now hosts a lake which has immersed a large area of the township. Subic and Olongapo offer much to do with night clubs, casinos and some spectacular sightseeing on the old Naval base and bushwalks hosted by natives that formerly served to instruct the U.S. defense people in jungle survival and evasion.
